Guapo’s – The Alex

October 6th, 2007 · No Comments · Restaurants, The Alex

Guapo’s in Tenleytown, DCDown in DC this weekend visiting Rob and Alison (sister in law) and really more importantly, our six month old nephew Stewart (on the right here obviously). Yesterday was Rob’s 31st, so after we arrived, they bolted to have a nice grownup meal, and in a very Freaky Friday vibe, we became the parents with a young child – but that doesn’t stop you from going out to dinner – enter Guapo’s. Walking distance from their house, loud, child friendly mexican chain. It could be a recipe for a foodie nightmare. Surprisingly, it is not.

The tortilla chips and salsa that come out to start are fresh and flavorful, and while I can’t speak to the entire menu, the carne asada fajita I had was really flavorful steak, with a freshly made tortilla, and even cooked perfectly medium rare. Eleanor had the mahi mahi special, and the fish was fresh and juicy. It’s nothing fancy or special, but it’s good, satisfying and cheap.

But more than that, we felt welcome and comfortable with Stewart in tow. The restaurant was loud enough that the noise of crying babies was not annoying to us, and when Stewart fussed, we weren’t upsetting anyone else’s meal. To be in that sort of environment and the food to be this good was a treat. This freaky friday vision of the future bodes well for us.

On a final note, may I say for the record that Stewart is a damned cute baby!

B (A+ for the baby!)
