Faicco’s Pork Store - The Italian Special

Ok, so it’s been about…oh, forever since I’ve posted anything to here. Let’s say it started with some technical glitches that translated into long term laziness. Well no more! I promise that from now on there will be frequent and probably largely meaningless posts.
Anyhow, down to business. It’s time to start blogging my work lunches.
There’s a lot of great food near my office, as you walk in one direction you’re in Soho, another the West Village, and another Greenwich Village. So from now on I’ll be updating what I think of these places, and give you my loyal non-existent readers a view into my gullet.
Faicco’s Pork Store is a great local old school butcher shop on Bleaker street in the village. Been around forever, sell all kinds of great stuff, but in particular, they have a great sliced meat/sandwich counter, along with one of the great Italian sandwiches. At $10 it may seem expensive until you realize you’re buying two meals. Great to go with a friend/co-worker and split one, or as I did, eat half for lunch, and the other half is my dinner in the air tonight as I fly to Michigan - part of my new strategy of not buying food in airports or on planes, with the exception of the new Jet blue terminal at JFK.
The sandwich is absolutely colossal, on a fresh semolina hero. Made with Ham Cappicola, Prosciutto di Parma, hot soppresatta, fresh mozzarella, shredded lettuce, tomatoes and topped with salt pepper oil and vinegar, it’s got a lot of complex flavors. But what makes the sandwich work so well is that they all blend with each other beautifully. No flavor is overpowering, and texturally the sandwich is fairly perfect, with the meats sliced thinly enough that they chew in sync with the bread.
If they only sold this sandwich by the half, it would make it into the lunch repertoire much more often.
