Potbelly Subs

A Wreck

I’m a huge fan of Potbelly Subs. Head and shoulders above the other sub chains. Sadly, there are none in NYC - and as of yet no immediate plans to expand there (trust me, I checked - and they’re corporate owned not franchise based). However, whenever I’m in DC or Michigan visiting family, I make sure that at least one lunch is at potbelly.

I usually go for “A Wreck” - which is Salami, Roast Beef, Turkey and Ham with Swiss cheese. They are of the oven toasted sub variety, but unlike Quiznos, their bread meats and toppings are a huge cut above, and lack any feel of artificial flavors. Topped with the works (which includes hot peppers which I love, and oil and seasonings) this toasted sub is fantastic.

By way of comparison I wrote a review of Faicco’s Italian Special the other day. While that sandwich is unquestionably a cut above (as it should be), the toasting of the Potbelly sub is enough to put it in the conversation. Also, it’s sized for a single person.

The other things they have at potbelly are excellent as well. At the insistence (strong insistence) of the counter person I tried the chili, and it is indeed surprisingly good. Deep flavors with just enough heat to make it interesting. All of their baked goods are quite tasty as well, and the make fantastic hand scooped old fashioned milkshakes as well.

Hopefully they’ll either decide to franchise at some point, or as a corporation move in to NY so I can get my fix on a more regular basis. Until then I suppose I’ll just have to subsist on the glut of amazing non-chain sandwich places within a 10 minute walking radius of my office or home. It’s good to live/eat in NYC.
